Letting Go; A Necessary Decision

  • Have you ever come to a place where letting go is haaaaaarrrrrdddd
  • Have you ever lost an idea to someone or just couldn’t remember it?
  • Ever been at a place where you have been wronged and it hurts so bad that letting go felt like “Urgh!”

It is not an easy thing to forgive and let go. Letting go is hard no doubt but it is necessary to heal and get better.

Candle without fire…

A man had a little daughter, an only and much beloved child. He lived only for her, she was his life.

But when she became ill and her illness resisted the efforts of the best obtainable physicians, he became like a man possessed, moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health.

His best efforts proved fruitless, however, and the child died.

The father was totally irreconcilable.

He became a bitter recluse, shutting himself away from his many friends, refusing every activity that might restore his poise and bring him back to his normal self.

Then one night he had a dream.

He was in heaven and witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels.

They were marching in an apparently endless line past the Great White Throne. Every white-robed, angelic tot carried a candle.

He noticed, however, that one child’s candle was not lit. Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl.

Rushing towards her, while the pageant faltered, he seized her in his arms, caressed her tenderly, and asked,

“How is that your candle is the only one not lit?” “Father, they often relight it, but your tears always put it out again,” she said.

Just then he awoke from from his dream. The lesson was crystal clear, and it’s effects were immediate. From that hour on he was no longer a recluse, but mingled freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates.

No longer would his little darling’s candle be extinguished by his ‘useless’ tears.

There were times that ideas I’ve wanted to execute with others have been hijacked and used without consent. But it was my choice to let it go and move on. Because dwelling in it will only kill your spirit and kill creativity.

There are clients who don’t just pay for consultancy or don’t value your intellectual property. But you have to let it go and move on.

In your career and what you do, you will be offended.

The business you are into, someone will double-cross, scam or play a fast one on you.

In your organization, you may not get the treatment you deserve.

In life a lot happens that we have justification to hold on to things and people that have hurt us. It is almost justifiable to be offended and cry foul. But if you hang unto it, it will hurt you more than it hurts them.

Don’t love it so much you can’t let it go…

The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward – Steve Maraboli
