How to Know and Succeed at What You Are Good at7 min read

Am I doing what I love? Will I succeed? Will I ‘blow’? How will I know and succeed at what I am good at?

These questions and thoughts pop in your head once in a while. So many people are stuck doing what they love for more than 3-4 years and still doubt or question their decision because of the immediate results they’re getting. So, how do you know and succeed at what you are good at?

If you’re positive and really excited and enthusiastic about what you’re doing, it’s going to happen, and it’s going to happen big time. — Shawn Mendes

Some have started ventures that haven’t been up to a year and are reaping results already. But others have been on same or other ventures they love over ten years without ‘tangible’ success. Even though success is a process, everyone wants to see tangible progress. But how do you if the process is worth the effort? And how do you know you are good at what you do to succeed at it?

Because in the end, we just want to do what we love. But will it pay us and pay the bills? Because times will come when you will almost doubt your passion out of of frustration.

How do we know if it will all work out in the end? And how do you know what you are good at so you can do all that is possible to succeed in it?

Here are some ways to know what you are good and succeed at:

1. You want to do it badly

You think about it always. You’re studying and doing things towards it. Have you ever read a book and it read like the author wrote you a personal letter? At times you read to a place where you feel like just stopping and stepping out to go DO before you continue. Ever read about how to become wealthy in life and found out while reading that you are already doing some of the stuff it’s telling you to do?

You just want to do it badly that all you do is think and do things that revolve around that endeavour. Your eyes are lit and your ears prick when you hear about it.

2. Time seems to fly when you’re doing it

I have worked on some jobs before deciding to be a full-time creative entrepreneur and taking it online to blog about my experiences and services. Those times I worked on those jobs, I felt like a drain pipe was connected to me. The first days and weeks of course are usually interesting. But soon, it becomes a routine that seems to make time crawl round the clock.

3. You get commended and recommended because you know and succeed at what you are good at

Whether you have passed through it or not there will be a time especially early in your career when wake up and don’t feel like going out. When you perform nobody gets to pat you on the shoulder or shake your hand. There are times you will not be paid your worth or commended. But in those times too something happens as a sign to motivate you to keep on. You get commended by people who you didn’t know have been watching. You get recommended for works you didn’t remember someone too note of. People tell you that you are an inspiration. Suddenly, people will want to work with you. This is how to know and succeed at what you are good at.

4. People who never met you make ‘casual’ statements about it

Have you ever been in public before and someone made a statement about you who has never met you before? And they accurately emphasized a strength or passion you may not have exhibited before them or you have been thinking about? It’s a confirmation to your “Lord, I need a sign.” Have you ever been told a story that sounds like someone close to you told the person narrating it your story?
You may be sharing a similar story with someone who has passed through same or even worse situations to succeed. Find people in your field who you can study closely and see how they grew. Read biographies and autobiographies. There is always something to extract from those stories. Let your success story also be told because you know and succeed at what you are good at. Listen to what more than one person has said…

5. You get support and attract critics

As you become an influence and know what you are good at or what people have determined you to be good at, the line becomes drawn. Even as people begin to like you, understand also that not everyone will like you. And that number will grow both ways. I have been complemented to be witty plenty times. But in the same space of time I have also been told to find because I didn’t seem to be good by their judgement. You will get same too. Just learn to take it and do your thing the best way you can whether your critics are telling the truth or nah. You don’t have to do anything particularly wrong or right to be hated or liked. It means you are making progress. Give them more to talk about. You will meet relevant people and things will happen that will make other things happen positively.

6. It comes to you naturally

At times you can’t even tell why you do what and how you do it. It’s like asking a bird how it flies. Have you ever had ideas come you so much that you could sleep even at night? You either have your phone’s draft page open or a pen and pad close by to jot and expand ideas. Don’t ask me why I spend too much time in the loo room. That’s where ideas come to me often. hehehehe. For some, they come seamlessly in the shower and they have to hurry out and jot them. When people who are gifted with dancing step on the dance floor they don’t struggle to dance. And they can dance hours on end when others have fagged out. You know and succeed at what you are good at when you don’t get tired easily.

7. You can make a viral mistake

Do you know you can make a viral ‘mistake’? You know that you can also put in your best in a piece and people won’t like it as much as you thought? Do you know that something you were not even wholeheartedly into, while creating it, is what people can pick and make to go viral? It happens especially with performing artists. An artist can write songs and even choose their favourite piece. But the ones they never expected to even go as far end up announcing them. And this is where to find the balance of what you like and what people really want. You do it casually but that is the thing people really love. This is how to know and succeed at what you are good at.

8. You do it a certain way

Creativity distinguishes you. You may do it in ways people don’t understand. But they find it fascinating. You might even be doing stuff nobody else is doing. You have to make creative decisions to be successful. And that may also mean standing alone and doing stuff nobody else dares to do over and over again. Eventually you will succeed with results because no one can do it the certain way that only you can do it. People may not be able to relate or you may not be able to explain to people but it’s fine. Not everyone can do it (like you). In your little way you can become an authority and the go-to guy.

Will I become ‘successful’ in the end? Only time will tell if you keep wanting it so badly and doing things over and over in that direction. Like a plant, let your roots keep growing toward the water call. Success is a process and it is relative.

So, now that you know how to know and succeed at what you are good at…
